About our future of tourism project

The future of tourism is a project from responsibletravel.com with media partner Geographical.

responsibletravel.com

responsibletravel.com is a business with long term ambitions to change tourism for the benefit of local people, tourists, the environment and the industry as a whole. By benefiting local communities and helping with conservation, we believe that responsible tourism is a better alternative to mass tourism. We actively campaign for positive change in the travel and tourism industry. By initiating projects such as this one which looks at the future of tourism, we hope to create interesting and important debates around the issues in responsible tourism. We hope we'll see more curious travellers who feel empowered in the future to demand more of their travel companies.

Based in Brighton, England we market over 3,000 holidays that we have screened to meet our specific responsible tourism criteria. From African safari adventures to organic B&Bs in England, our holidays aim to create better places for people to live and to visit. Launched in 2001 with backing from Dame Anita Roddick, the website is for travellers who want more real and authentic holidays that also benefit the environment and local people. In late 2008, the company launched a new travel community site - www.iknowagreatplace.com - a resource for travellers to share local travel secrets and great places they’ve discovered. We hope the site will help spark the ‘democratisation’ of travel; to empower travellers and locals alike to speak on behalf of places. Ultimately this will mean greater diversification of tourism destinations in the future - replacing the monopoly of ‘mega-icons’ like the Taj Mahal or the Pyramids with local alternatives.
